Gels That Serve as Mucus Simulants: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mucus is a critical part of the human body’s immune system that traps and carries away various particulates such as anthropogenic pollutants, pollen, viruses, etc. Various synthetic hydrogels have been developed to mimic mucus, using different polymers their backbones. Common these simulants three-dimensional gel network physically crosslinked capable loosely entrapping water within. Two challenges in mimicking mucus include need rheological properties its ability capture (its adhesion mechanism). In this paper, we review existing discuss rheological, adhesive, tribological properties. We show most, but not all, indeed mucus; like most hydrogel reviewed here demonstrated higher storage modulus than loss modulus, values are range found mucus. However, only one mimics adhesive (which for particulates), Polyvinyl alcohol–Borax hydrogel.

Epidermal mucus, a major determinant in fish health: a review
Fish epidermal mucus contains innate immune components, secreted by globlet cells that provide the primary defence against different pathogenic microbes and act as a barrier between fish and its immediate niche. The major function of mucus includes entrapment and sloughing of microbes. The mucus also contains many factors such as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), lysozymes, lectins, proteases, etc...
متن کاملMucus trail tracking in a predatory snail: olfactory processing retooled to serve a novel sensory modality
INTRODUCTION The rosy wolfsnail (Euglandina rosea), a predatory land snail, finds prey snails and potential mates by following their mucus trails. Euglandina have evolved unique, mobile lip extensions that detect mucus and aid in following trails. Currently, little is known of the neural substrates of the trail-following behavior. METHODS To investigate the neural correlates of trail followin...
متن کاملNano-gels: A versatile nano -carrier platform for drug delivery systems: A mini review
Nowadays the application of nanotechnology in different biomedical fields such as drug delivery is increasing due to its unique advantages. With this in mind, it is widely believed that nanogels as the nanometer-sized networked polymeric particles have a considerable impact on drug delivery systems as biocompatible nanocarriers due to their unique characteristics such as high loading capacity, ...
متن کاملINTRANASAL THERMOREVERSIBLE MUCOADHESIVE GELS: A Review
Almost 40% of active Pharmaceutical ingredients have low oral bioavailability, high hepatic first-pass metabolism and also less efficient in crossing the blood brain barrier for brain targeting through oral delivery. To overcome this problem the various system such as: nasal spray, gels, emulsions, droplets, suspensions, powders and thermoreversible mucoadhesive gels etc have been studied for n...
متن کاملA glycosulphatase that removes sulphate from mucus glycoprotein.
A novel glycosulphatase has been purified from a mucus glycopeptide-degrading Prevotella from the colon. The purified enzyme removed inorganic [35S]sulphate from 35S-labelled native rat gastric mucus glycoprotein. Desulphation of mucus glycoprotein was initially rapid (19% complete after 10 min) but then plateaued, reaching only 33% after 3 h. Crude periplasmic extracts could remove 79% of the ...
